There will be a few summative assessments completed by the end of this unit.
1. Formal Lab Report- The students will put together a formal lab report, which is references throughout the first 3 lessons in the unit. They will collect background knowledge based on their notes to come up with a hypothesis. They will be assigned a homework assignment based on what they learned in Lesson 2 about Personal traits and they will create their own Pedigrees in Lesson 3 of the unit. This will all be compiled in a formal lab report, which will be turned in after they come up with their conclusions at home and type everything up. Most likely, this lab report will be due on a Monday, to give the students the weekend to put it all together. There is one formal lab report each quarter and this one will count towards their third quarter grade. It will be an investigative lab report, answering the questions “How are genes passed through my family?”
2. Quiz- There will be a quiz at the beginning of Lesson 3. The quiz will be on the key terms that they will have in their notes from the first two lessons. The quiz will be announces at the end of Lesson 2. It is important that the students have this quiz because they will need this vocabulary throughout the rest of the unit.
3. Genetics Research Project- Lesson 5 is the first of three lessons where the students will come up with a presentation on a genetic disease that they will be assigned. This is a three day project that will be completed in class and conclude with group presentations on their genetic disease. This will count as a project, and will be a percent of their third quarter grade.
4. There will be a chapter test at the end of this unit.
